Treated well, it lasts for years. The three enemies of crochet are the washing machine, the tumble dryer and weight. Here are the steps, from the gentlest to the most thorough.

1. Dust it

Turn the bag inside out and shake it. For the stitches, a soft clothes brush run along the rows is enough; a vacuum cleaner on low power, with a sock over the nozzle, also works.

2. Remove a stain

Act quickly. Dab with a white cloth dampened with cold water and a drop of mild soap, without rubbing: rubbing felts the stitches. Rinse by dabbing with clean water, then blot with a dry towel.

3. Wash by hand

Only if necessary, and only for a bag without wooden or leather handles or a delicate lining. Cold water, mild soap: gently squeeze the stitches without wringing or rubbing. Rinse the same way.

4. Dry flat

Roll the bag in a towel to absorb the water, without wringing. Reshape it, stuff it with paper or a towel, and leave it to dry flat, in the shade. Never use a tumble dryer or a radiator: heat shrinks and distorts.

5. Protect the handles

Wooden and wooden bead handles must not be soaked: clean the stitches around them with a damp cloth and dry the wood straight away. Leather handles benefit from a suitable conditioning cream from time to time.

6. Store it

Empty the bag, stuff it lightly to keep its shape, and store it flat or standing, never hanging up with things inside. A fabric bag or a pillowcase keeps the dust off.

Mistakes to avoid

Rubbing a stain: the stitches felt and the stain spreads.

Wringing the bag out: it loses its shape.

Hanging it up wet: it stretches under its own weight.

Leaving it full at the back of a cupboard: the handles leave marks on the stitches.

Drying it in direct sunlight: the colours fade.

What about the smaller pieces?

The crochet bandanas and hair snoods can be hand-washed in cold water and dried flat; the crochet earrings should not get wet: simply reshape them with your fingertips.

To choose a new bag: how to choose a handmade crochet bag. Hand wash only, and only if necessary.

My bag has stretched. What can I do?

Dampen it slightly, reshape it by stuffing it, and leave it to dry flat: the stitches often regain their hold.

Un sac au crochet vit : il prend la poussière du marché, une goutte de café, le sable de la […]

[22

post-1440","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gestes-matieres
["GET
