Here are the differences, and why our bags and accessories are crocheted.

The tool

The knitter uses two needles and keeps many stitches waiting on the needle. The crocheter uses a single tool ending in a small hook and works only one live stitch at a time: each stitch is finished before moving on to the next.

The stitch

Knitting forms small, flat, even Vs: a soft, stretchy fabric. Crochet forms raised stitches, like little knots: a denser, firmer fabric.

What each does best

Knitting : jumpers, scarves, anything that needs to be soft and to stretch.

Crochet : bags, storage pieces and anything that needs to hold its shape, plus open or circular motifs (rosettes, mandalas), which are easier to crochet than to knit.

Why crochet for a bag?

A bag has to carry weight without stretching, and dense crochet stitches are better suited to the job. They also allow structured shapes, like our half-moon bag , which stands up on its own, and strong open-work stitches, like those of a tote.

Handmade or machine-made?

Knitting is easily done by machine; it is often said that no machine truly reproduces crochet stitches. A piece in real crochet is therefore almost always made by hand, which explains its price and its small variations. To check, see how to spot a handmade crochet bag.

Crochet terms to know

Chain : the starting row of loops, the base of almost every crochet project.

Double crochet : the short, dense stitch used for bags that hold their shape.

Treble : a taller stitch that gives a softer fabric and open spaces.

Slip stitch : the stitch used to join and finish neatly.

How to tell them apart at a glance

Look closely at the stitches: Vs lined up in columns mean knitting; raised stitches, tight or open, mean crochet.

All our crochet pieces, crocheted by hand: bags, earrings, bandanas, coin purses.
