Hair snoods: how to wear one today

Beaded crochet hair snood — still life

The snood, a net that holds the hair, has come through the ages. Today it is back in crochet, colourful and beaded, like a piece of hair jewellery. Here is how to wear it, with our beaded turquoise hair snood.

Over a low bun

This is the simplest way: make a low bun, place the snood over it and draw it in around the bun. It holds your hair in place all evening and turns it into an accessory. One or two hairpins keep it secure.

Over loose hair

Worn like a headband, with the net over the back of the head and the hair falling free beneath: a bohemian look, ideal for a festival, a summer party or a country wedding.

Over a plait or a ponytail

Wrapped around the base of a ponytail, it takes the place of a scrunchie; over a thick plait, it sheathes it and makes the beads catch the light with every movement.

What to wear it with

Turquoise and black beads go with white, linen, black and summer dresses. For a party outfit, pair it with a plain dress and discreet earrings. Another time, a beaded bandana offers a simpler alternative: see how to wear a crochet bandana.

Snood, bandana or scarf?

The snood holds the hair and shows off a hairstyle, especially a bun. The bandana is knotted and frames the forehead or the nape of the neck; it is easier to wear every day. The scarf, for its part, is worn around the neck. For an evening, the beaded snood is the dressiest of the three; for a day in the sun, the bandana is the most practical.

How to wear it for your hair length

On long or mid-length hair, a low bun is the safest option. On short hair, place the snood over the back of the head and secure it with hairpins at the sides.

Care

Hand wash in cold water with a mild soap, without wringing and taking care with the beads; dry flat, easing the net back into shape.
