The Japanese knot bag, or knot bag, is a fabric bag whose fastening is also its handle: one end of fabric slips through a ring, and the bag is worn on the wrist. Inspired by the knotted fabric bags of Japan, it has become an evening bag in its own right. Here is how it works and how to wear it.
How it closes
The bag has two tall ends. One finishes in a ring, here in gold-tone metal; the other slips through it. Pull gently and the fabric draws in to close the opening. To open it, slide the end back out of the ring. No clasp, no zip: nothing to break.
How to wear it
- On the wrist, with the ring around your hand: your fingers stay free for a glass, a handshake, a photo.
- In the hand, holding the ring, like a small clutch.
- On the table at dinner: its flat base keeps it upright.
What to wear it with
The Japanese knot bag brings the pattern: floral brocade, marbled fabric, rosettes. So the dress stays plain. Grey and gold or blue and gold with black or midnight blue; plum and silver with ivory or lilac; ochre and powder pink with linen and terracotta tones. The fringe adds movement with every step: this is a bag that gets noticed on the dance floor.

When to wear it

Choose the fabric to suit her usual colours: grey and gold marble for a dark wardrobe, ochre rosettes for a warm wardrobe, plum and silver brocade for soft shades.
Care
Store it flat, with the fringe combed out with your fingers. Brocade and marbled fabrics cannot go in the washing machine: use a dry cloth, or dry cleaning if needed.
