Kabyle velvet waistcoat: how to wear it, pair it and care for it

· 4 min read

Cultured pearl necklace with gold-tone links — on velvet

The Kabyle waistcoat is the easiest piece of an occasion outfit to wear: sleeveless, in velvet and edged with an embroidered trim, it opens over any dress and transforms it. Here is how to choose it, wear it and keep it for years.

What makes a Kabyle waistcoat

What to wear it with

  • Over a modern Kabyle dress : the original pairing. Choose a waistcoat in a muted shade (midnight blue, taupe, grey) to calm the dress’s bright colours.
  • Over a plain dress : black, burgundy, cream. A petrol or midnight blue waistcoat becomes the colour.
  • Over a simple top and trousers : for Yennayer or a family dinner, the waistcoat alone marks the occasion.
  • Always open : a Kabyle waistcoat is worn open, with the dress or top showing. A brooch or fibula can close it at the top.

Which jewellery to wear with a Kabyle waistcoat

The trim sets the rule. Gold trim: gold-tone beaded jewellery, for example the cultured pearl and gold-tone medallion set. Silver-tone trim: crystals or white beads. With a petrol or midnight blue waistcoat, a turquoise set or citrine-tone set makes a bold contrast. Keep the necklace short if the waistcoat is closed at the top, long if it is open. You will find every set in our ceremony jewellery sets.

Which clutch

The clutch picks up the colour of the trim or the lining, not the dress. With a midnight blue waistcoat, a midnight blue gold-embroidered velvet clutch ; with a grey or taupe waistcoat, a black gold-embroidered clutch. See all our occasion clutches.

Kabyle waistcoat or embroidered bolero?

The Kabyle waistcoat is sleeveless and trimmed; the gold-thread embroidered bolero, inspired by the karakou, is embroidered all over and dressier. For a henna night or Yennayer, the waistcoat; for a wedding or an engagement, the bolero. Both are covered in our guide to North African ceremony outfits.

Caring for trimmed velvet

  • Never machine wash or tumble dry.
  • Store on a hanger, in a fabric cover, away from light.
  • Stains: dab with cold water, without rubbing the trim.
  • Full clean: a dry cleaner who handles velvet and metallic threads.
  • Iron inside out, on a thick towel, with gentle steam, never on the trim.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a Kabyle waistcoat outside of ceremonies?

Yes: over jeans and a plain top, it’s a jacket with character for an evening out. Velvet copes well with winter.

Can it be made in another colour?

On request, as a piece made in the colour you want; write to us with the colour of your dress.

Are the waistcoats embroidered by hand?

The trim is sewn onto the velvet by hand; nothing is heat-bonded. Our guide to spotting a truly handmade piece explains what to look for.
